Structural engineering and verification of a publicly accessible timber lookout structure designed to accommodate visitors and environmental loading. The project included global structural analysis, stability verification, and serviceability checks to ensure safety, durability, and long-term performance in accordance with applicable Eurocodes.
Project Overview: Public Timber Lookout Structure
The Public Timber Lookout Structure project involved structural engineering and verification services for a publicly accessible observation structure located in a natural landscape. AR-TEC was commissioned to ensure structural safety, stability, and long-term performance for a structure designed to accommodate visitors and provide panoramic views of the surrounding environment.
Design Intent: Safe & Durable Public Timber Structure
The lookout structure consists of a multi-level timber framework supported by a reinforced concrete foundation system. Given its public use, the design placed strong emphasis on safety, durability, user comfort, and robustness under environmental and crowd-related loading.
Structural System: Timber Framework & Concrete Foundations
AR-TEC carried out a global structural analysis of the timber load-bearing system, including verification of primary members, load paths, and overall stability. The reinforced concrete foundation blocks and anchorage systems were engineered to safely transfer loads into the ground while ensuring long-term durability.
Load Cases & Stability Verification
The structure was verified for wind loading, crowd loading, and environmental effects in accordance with applicable Eurocodes. Special attention was given to global stability, overturning resistance, and interaction between the timber superstructure and concrete foundations.
Serviceability & User Comfort
In addition to strength verification, AR-TEC assessed deformations and vibrations to ensure adequate user comfort. Serviceability Limit State (SLS) checks were performed to control deflections and dynamic response under expected usage conditions.
